Lookman Set To Switch Allegiance From England To Nigeria
Ademola Lookman is reportedly set to switch his allegiance from representing England to Nigeria.
The 22-year-old is said to have already put in place requirements for representing the Super Eagles of Nigeria, a report confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation technical assistant, Tunde Adelakun.
Lookman who was born in England to Nigerian parents has represented England youth teams and also played a vital role in England’s 2017 U20 World Cup win.
The former Everton forward is however still eligible to play for Nigeria having not featured for the Three Lions of England in a competitive match.
The NFF technical assistant, Adelakun said Lookman has already prepared the requirements needed to play for Nigeria.
“Lookman has applied for the switch and all the documents are in order,” the NFF technical assistant said, as per AOI.
“It’s a positive step forward when he made his commitment to Nigeria and we are just waiting for a Fifa clearance.
“Once the go-ahead is sorted, it will be up to coach Gernot Rohr to decide if his club performance would earn him a call-up.
“He’s one of three former England youth players we’ve filed for but they are all aware of the caveat. All the players were told that they can only earn a place in the squad by playing regular club football.”
The former Toffees forward was impressive during his loan stint at Bundesliga leaders, RB Salzburg in 2018, netting five goals in 11 appearances.
He has however failed to replicate that stellar season since he made a permanent move to the club from Everton last summer, having only represented the Bundesliga outfit five times this term.
If the switch is completed, he would join a list of Nigerian players who sometime in the past switched allegiance from the Three Lions including Alex Iwobi, Shola Ameobi, Ola Aina and Victor Moses.
