Abba Kyari Behind Sack of Osinbajo’s Aide – Presidency Source

Indications have shown that Abba Kyari, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff is behind the recent sack of 35 aides from the office of the Vice president, Osinbajo.

Recall that Kyari was in the news recently after he took a bill to the President who is on vacation in London to pend his signature to the document. People had said that this was part of the waste of tax payer’s money as the document would have been signed by Osinbajo as who would do so in an acting capacity. Buhari, however, didn’t hand over to Osinbajo when he left for his vacation.

It was gathered that Buhari approved the sacking of at least 35 out of over 80 aides which include some senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, and technical assistants.

Responsibilities given to the Vice President was recently reduced when he was told to seek presidential approvals for agencies under his supervision and the National Social Investment Programme (N-SIP) was moved from his office to a new ministry.

Buhari had also scrapped the Economic Management Team chaired by Osinbajo and replaced it with the Economic Advisory Council under the direct purview of the President.

Guardian reports that a presidency source said that the affected staff already had foreknowledge of the development. They had hoped the decision would be rescinded by Buharias they tarry a while until Kyari returns from his London visit to the President.

According to the source, the affected aides were surprised when news filtered in on Tuesday that their sack had been approved by the President in a correspondence presented to him by the CoS during the visit.

Kyari, who plans Buhari’s schedules is the President’s closest aides and friend. It was also gathered that Ministers reportedly queue in his office to see the President.

His influence was confirmed during a retreat organised by the presidency for ministers-designate when Buhari declared that all communications and appointments to the presidency should be routed through the Office of the Chief of Staff as it is the normal (procedure) in this presidential system.

According to online reports, some of the aides had their access tags retrieved at the gate yesterday as they reported for work. The security personnel checked their names against a list and seized the tags.

Osinbajo’s media aide, Laolu Akande, is yet to react to the sack.

Meanwhile, another presidency source said Osinbajo must have been the one that orchestrated the action in order  to get rid of some of those aides found wanting on graft-related issues and other activities inimical to the policies of the administration.

Recall that Osinbajo had been accused in the past of employing predominantly members of his faith when he acted as president. He was alleged to be religious biased in appointments before Buhari returned from his medical trip.
