Alleged Drug Trafficking: I Was Confident of Zainab and Ibrahim’s Release, Says Saudi Ambassador

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, Adnan Mahmoud Bostaji, has said that he was confident that the Saudi Arabian Authority would release Zainab Aliyu and Ibrahim Abubakar, who were arrested on drug-related charges.

The Ambassador, who stated this during an iftar organized by the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday said because he followed up with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria and worked with them on the case.

“The laws of Saudi Arabia are based on justice and innocent people deserve to be freed,” the ambassador said.

Speaking on the execution of Mrs. Kudirat Adesola Afolabi who was sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia in November 2018, the ambassador said she was undoubtedly guilty and that the Nigerian government also acknowledged her guilt of attempting to smuggle drugs into the country.

Ambassador Bostaji, therefore, call on  Nigerian airport officials to take more stern measures to prevent a reoccurrence of similar cases.

In the same vein, the ambassador also called for more enlightenment programmes for Nigerian pilgrims to fully understand the punishment that smuggling carries before they travel.

“Nigerian pilgrims need to know that this is a very serious thing that carries dangerous consequences,” the envoy added.

In a related development, the lawmaker representing Kano South Senatorial District, Kabiru Gaya, has thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and the Senate President Bukola Sarari, for the release of the duo.

Senator Gaya commended the efforts of Buhari and Saraki as well as that of those who contributed to the safe return of the duo from Saudi Arabia when he raised a point of order during Tuesday’s plenary in the Senate where he called the attention of his colleagues to their return,

iDONSABI reports that the two Nigerians returned to the country on Monday after they were released by the Saudi Arabian authorities.
