Arsenal Appoint Mikel Arteta As Manager
Mikel Arteta has now been appointed manager at Arsenal football club. The Spaniard who served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant manager put pen to paper, signing a contract that should keep him at the Emirates till 2023.
The 37-year-old is set to be unveiled as the club’s head coach soonest.
The Spaniard spent four years at the North London club as a player between the years 2011 and 2016, fitting in the midfield position. The former assistant manager during his time at the club won two FA Cups.
He makes the switch from Manchester City where he served as assistant manager under the tutelage of Spanish boss, Pep Guardiola.
“This is a huge honour. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game and that’s been made very clear to me in my discussions with Stan and Josh Kroenke, and the senior people from the club,” the former Arsenal player told the club’s official website.
“We all know there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that but I am confident we’ll do it. I’m realistic enough to know it won’t happen overnight but the current squad has plenty of talent and there is a great pipeline of young players coming through from the academy.”
Arteta came in as a replacement for Unai Emery who was sacked only few weeks ago and was in charge when the Gunners recorded their worst ever run of form for 27 years.
The former midfielder will join up with the club at Liverpool as the North London club gears up preparation for their Premier League outing against Everton at the Goodison park.
He would be seeing the game from the stands as Ljunberg – who served as interim boss after Emery was dismissed – takes charge for the final time.
