Biography of Munachi Abii

Munachi Gail Theresa Abii Nwankwo popularly known as Munachi Abii is a Nigerian rapper / hip-hop artist, songwriter, television presenter, model, actress and entrepreneur. As a beauty queen, she captivates hearts; as an artiste, TV presenter, songwriter and actress, she dazzles them all. The combination of beauty, brains and talent has made her relevant and kept her in limelight.

Early life and background of Munachi Abii

Munachi Abii was born on the 5th of November 1987 in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. She obtained her O’Level qualifications from Federal Government Girls’ College, Abuloma and studied International relations and Diplomacy at the Benson Idahosa University. The Imo State native was encouraged by her family to pursue her passion for music and arts.

Her Career

During her second year at University in 2007, Muna won the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant. As a beauty queen, she raised awareness about Polio and Sickle cell. That same year, she represented Nigeria at Miss World in China. In 2009, Muna worked with MBGN 2000 winner, Matilda Kerry on a project to raise awareness on cervical cancer.

Her Music Career

Prior to winning the MBGN pageant, she was part of a Port Harcourt based rap group, The Specimen A, and collaborated with Terry Da Rapman on the track ‘My PH Girl’. As a solo rapper, she performed under the stage name “Babyrella” which was later changed to Muna. She has written songs for artistes such as J Martins and Waje. The ex-beauty queen was a video vixen in P Square’s Ifunanya.

In June 2010, after years of working with several artistes, Muna signed a multi-year management contract with Ayo Shonaiya’s RMG company and started working on her debut album The Goddess, The Hustler which featured singles like I Feel Real and Killer Queen. In 2011, she wrote the lyrics for Waje’s hit single So Inspired. Muna was one of the female rappers who represented Nigeria on the globally televised BET Cypher for the BET Awards in 2011.

The following year saw the rapper releasing two singles – Here to Stay and Down Down Low. Munachi has her hands in the beauty product enterprise. She joined the league of celebrities who are beauty entrepreneurs as she launched her range of beauty products called BerryWorks. As a television presenter, she has co-presented the television series Malta Guinness Street Dance Africa, Mr Nigeria pageant , The 2012 Nokia Don’t Break The Beat, multi-city Rap Battle contest and 2018 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

In 2018, the beauty entrepreneur took time off the music scene and make an acting debut in the movie “The Women”. Since then she’s been featuring in movies. In 2019, She played the love interest of Nnamdi Okeke in the movie Living in Bondage: Breaking Free.

Controversy

Musicians are mostly associated with beefs. In April 2012, she was involved in a war of words controversy with veteran rapper Mode 9. This was as a result of a disagreement over Mode 9’s comments when she hosted the Nokia-sponsored rap competition, Don’t Break The Beat. A squabble ensued making her snap at the rapper and asking him to ‘pass the mic’, a phrase that has since become associated with both artistes. The video of the incident went viral on YouTube while many fans went on social media platforms to berate Muna.

Many expected a public beef or diss tracks from both acts, but both acted maturedly and resolved the issues between them. On May 31st, 2012,  at the popular Lagos midweek concert ‘Industry Nite’ (which celebrated Muna’s two new rap singles), Muna and Mode 9 performed a freestyle version of Notorious B.I.G’s Juicy.

In 2011, Muna signed an endorsement deal with Unilever as a model for Lux and featured in commercials for the brand.

She was once romantically linked with one of the famous P-square brothers, Peter Okoye. In August 2017, it was reported that Munachi’s then 23 year old boyfriend, Tomi Thomas cheated on her with series of girls. She was left completely heartbroken on learning of his unfaithfulness.

Awards and Nominations

She was nominated for the Most Promising Act to Watch at the 2011 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

The sultry actress who is gradually carving out a niche for herself in the entertainment world will in no time be ranked amongst the highest paid celebrity in the industry.
