His birth name is Chibuzo Azubuike Nelson but today he is popularly known as Phyno; Nigerian rapper, singer and record producer. He is well known for his performing his songs in his native language, Igbo. Phyno is regarded as the “Man of the Year” after a song he released early in his career.
Phyno’s Early Life
Phyno is from the South-Eastern State of Anambra but was born and bred in Enugu on the 9th of October 1986. He is the fourth child of five children. His stage name was given to him by his friend, Emeka which means Phenomenal. His desire to become a musician started in his secondary school days. His initial desire was to become a pilot but was later told he could become a medical doctor.
As a student Phyno taught himself to play the drums and the piano. He also was able to remake beats and sounds he liked. From there he proceeded to the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu where he studied Public Administration. It was in his secondary school that he started making some money from music. Phyno as a young man use to look up to Mr. Raw; an Nigerian (Igbo) rapper who is known for performing in Igbo too.
Phyno’s Rise to Fame
As a producer, Phyno produced for people like Timaya, Flavour, Ruggedman, Bracket, 2Shotz, J Martins and Mr. Raw. In 2010 after moving to Lagos and taking the advice Ill Bliss to start, he started rapping. His attempt to start recording his first album; No Guts, No Glory began in 2012 but was released in 2014. The album had guest appearances like Stormrex, Omawumi, Olamide, Mr. Raw, Flavour, MI and more. Most of the songs were recorded in pidgin and the Nigerian Igbo language. Ghost mode single was released in 2012 and was seen as the lead single for the album. The song had Olamide featuring in it.
Other song in the album included songs like Alobam, Man of the Year and Parcel. The video of Man of the Year (Obago) was banned by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation in September 2013.
His music has also brought him fame and awards too. In 2012 his song Ghost Mode won the best collabo at The Headies Awards. In 2013 he won the same award in the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Phyno’s career as a rapper and producer has earned over 15 nominations and 4 awards in the different award ceremonies.
In 2014 he became the ambassador for the Guinness Nigeria Made of Black campaign alongside Olamide and Eva Alordiah. He also performed at the launch of the campaign and was part of the video adverts too.
Phyno was involved in scandal of impregnating one Rita Edmond but this he denied during an interview with Punch Newspaper in 2014. He was also criticized for a picture that showed him joining lips and face with the Limpopo master, Kaycee. People were wondering if he was gay but denied such blaming it on wrong camera angling.
Cihibuzo Nelson Azubuike aka Phyno has become almost a common name in the lips of many Nigerians especially due to his hit songs that keeps dropping. Some of which are Connect, Fada and more. He is also a master performer and has done that in a number of Nigerian cities.
