Bird Flu Returns to Kano State, Nigeria

The Government of Kano State announced on Wednesday that the dreaded disease known as avian influenza, aka Bird-Flu had resurfaced in the state.

Director of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Shehu Bawa, disclosed this in Kano, yesterday. The Director reaveled that the outbreak was discovered in a popular poultry farm located in the Kano state capital.

Dr. Shehu revealed that the farm where the disease was discovered had been depopulated while other health and safety measures have already been put in place in order to contain the disease and prevent an outbreak.

“The state government has taken proactive measures to contain the spread of the disease to other farms within the state.” Dr. Bawa said.

The veterinary doctor also disclosed that some of the measures being put in place to check the outbreak of the disease includes, disinfection of the affected farm as well as routine surveillance of other farms which are within the confines of the state.

Dr. Shehu Bawa implored farmers to report any suspected outbreak of disease in their farms to the appropriate health centres without delay, so as to enable government take prompt action.

Dr. Bawa said: “I am using this opportunity to advise farmers to immediately report any outbreak of the disease to enable government take prompt response.”

Sickly and dying birds are a huge indicator of a bird flu outbreak in poultry farms.

Symptoms of bird flu in humans includes: cough, diarrhea, respiratory difficulties, a burning fever of over 100.4°F, severe headache, muscle, aches, malaise, runny nose and sore throat – all these could ultimately lead to the death of the patient if adequate health care is not administered in a timely manner.
