Brazil Records Spike in COVID-19 Cases as Desperate Search for Open Bed Continues

Brazil has reported a record 13,994 Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, taking the country’s total confirmed cases to 202,918.

Brazil, which is the hardest-hit country in Latin America has now recorded 13,933 deaths since the outbreak began.

The same was Mexico that is also experiencing a spike in the number of cases. Mexico is behind Brazil with 2,409 new infections on Thursday, bringing its total confirmed coronavirus cases to 42,595. An additional 257 coronavirus deaths brought total fatalities to 4,477.

Brazil has also failed to provide enough hospital beds for the surging number of critical coronavirus patients, Pariculalrly is Manaus, a city of 2 million people on the Amazon River deep in the rainforest which has recorded over 2,000 death in April, which is over four times the monthly average.

The South American city is now running out of coffins with hundreds are dying at home, either because they can’t get treatment at the hospitals or because they fear they won’t.

Ambulances have been seen across the streets with no clear destination, waiting for someone to die and relinquish a hospital bed.

As the pandemic is leaving the advanced countries are they are gradually reducing their lockdown, the next phase is pushing into Africa and Latin America.

For instance, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, bodies have been left out in the streets while corpses have been stacked haphazardly in a small hospital room in Loreto, Peru.
