1. My Standing as Nnamdi Kanu’s Surety is Illegal – Sen. Abaribe

Senator Enyinna Abaribe has filed an appeal through his lawyer, Chukwuma Machukwu Ume, SAN saying that his continued standing as Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer is illegal.

He explained that the trial Judge did not follow the Nigerian Constitution when she maintained that one of those to stand surety for the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu must be a serving Senator.

He said as a senator, he was exempted from standing as surety.

This came following the ruling by Justice Binta Nyako of the A-Court that he should forfeit the bail sum of N100m, having failed to produce Nnamdi Kanu for continuation of the treason charges against him.

2. We’ll Not Participate in 2019 Elections — ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened not to participate in the forthcoming elections.

ASUU raised the threat after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said that ad hoc staff, who would partake in the 2019 elections, will undergo criminality check to determine whether they have criminal records.

ASUU, in its bulletin said: “In accordance with the ASUU’s long standing position, ASUU as a Union will not participate in the conduct of 2019 general elections, although members may voluntarily participate in the conduct of the elections.”

3. Masked Policemen Whisk Dino Melaye Away from Police Hospital

Senator Dino Melaye has been in Police hospital, Abuja since he surrendered himself to the police following the eight days’ police siege on his Abuja residence.

However, today, masked policemen stormed the hospital and forced the lawmaker into an unmarked vehicle and drove away.

4. Atiku’s Claims, A Case of Acute Paranoia – Lai Mohammed

The FG has debunked the allegation of the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar that the government was using state resources for APC Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign as untrue.

He said that the allegation was made by a media aide to the PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in his statement on Friday, said Abubakar’s allegation was provoked by the ministry’s publicized achievements of President Buhari’s administration.

He dismissed the allegation as “acute paranoia’’, adding that those who made the allegation should prove it.

5. DELSU Sacks Two Lecturers over Sex-For-Marks

The management of the Delta State University (DELSU), has taken disciplinary actions against some members of staff over what it described as sundry offences and alleged gross misconduct.

The institution relieved two of its lecturers in the Department of Economics of their duties, and sent a professor in the same department on compulsory retirement.

Three other lecturers from the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension were also investigated over sex-for-marks allegations and were found wanting.

A statement signed by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Victor Peretemode, said the three lecturers are stagnated for three years while the professor would be retired from the university system next week.

However, the names of the offending staff were not given.

6. I will Not Relegate Women to ‘the Other Room’ – Atiku

Presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has assured Nigerian women of active engagements in his government when he becomes president.

Abubakar gave his assurance in Abuja on Friday during the National Women Conference organised by the leadership of PDP to mobilize women voters.

In his words, “Between the youth and women, you have 70% in my government; you are not going to be confined to the other room. You have seen my 3 wives here; they are not in the other room. I promise you that you will be at the front of my government and not in the other room”, he told the women.

7. IG Ibrahim Idris Lays Foundation for Police PR school

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has laid the foundation of the Nigeria Police Public Relations School in Ilorin on Friday.

He was represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Ahmed Oladipupo.

He said the school was created to enhance the Police public collaborations based on mutual respect and understanding.

According to him, “This is part of my resolve to bequeath to the Force an avenue for the development of public relations practice, in response to the daunting challenges of policing Nigeria in the 21st century,”.

8. Buhari Pledges to End Illegal Tax Collections from Traders

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday made a pledge to the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers Association of Nigeria who visited him in Abuja.

He pledged that his government would look into the issue of illegal tax collections to encourage more private sector businesses to thrive in the country.

President Buhari told the delegation led by Alhaji Ali Tahir that his administration had genuine intentions to put a stop to illegal taxes in the country, despite the fact that ‘‘old habits die hard.’’

9. Army Lays 14 Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram Ambush to Rest

The Army on Friday laid to rest 14 soldiers, who died during a Boko Haram ambush on December 24, 2018.

News Agency of Nigeria reported that the 14 soldiers were on escort duty when they were ambushed on their way back to Kaduna by terrorists on Damaturu-Maiduguri road.

10. Dino Melaye Transferred to DSS Hospital – Police

The Nigeria Police has confirmed that they were behind the whisking away of Kogi-West Senator Dino Melaye in an unmarked vehicle.

Police spokesman, Moshood Jimoh, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, in a statemnt on Friday said Melaye was taken by policemen to the medical facilities of the DSS.

Part of the statement read, “Dino Melaye was taken for medical attention at the Police Clinic, Abuja, after he surrendered himself for arrest on 4th January, 2019. The Police medical team at the Police Hospital, Abuja certified that Senator Dino Melaye is well and healthy to stand trial after treating him. However, due to the complaint from Senator Dino Melaye that he is not well, the Police Investigation Team has taken him this afternoon to another government hospital, DSS Medical Facility in Abuja for further medical attention”.
