1. PDP Atiku Rejects Appointment of Another CJN

The PDP and its Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has rejected the appointment of a new acting Chief Justice of Nigeria while an appointed Chief Justice of the Nigeria, CJN Walter Onnoghen is still in office.

In a statement issued by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Friday in Abuja, said that the PDP totally rejects attempts to illegally appoint an illegitimate Chief Justice of Nigeria while the Legitimate CJN Walter Onnoghen has been suspended.

2. Reasons Benue South Will Never Vote APC – David Mark

Benue South Senator and Former Senate President, David Mark has stated that the people of Benue South will never vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming presidential election.

He gave three reasons, one of which is the scrapping of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo by the APC government upon assuming office, students of which he said would have been in 300 levels by now.

The slow nature with which work was progressing on the Iweto Bridge was also another reason the people of his district would reject the APC at the polls, he said.

Lastly, he said the stopping of work on the Otobi Dam for no justifiable reason made the people feel denied of many benefits of the such as an all year round farming.

3. Imo Orders Closure of Public Schools as Okorocha’s Nwosu Flag-Off Campaign

Public schools in the 27 councils of Imo State were on Friday closed for AA Governorship candidate, Uche Nwosu’s campaign flag-off.

Teachers, pupils and students were asked to attend the flag-off campaign of the Action Alliance (AA) governorship candidate, Uche Nwosu, who is a son-in-law of the current Governor, Rochas Okorocha.

The teachers and public servants, who came, clad in white and black clothes, wrote their names as attendees to escape sanction.

The event, which attracted a large crowd, took place at the Dan Anyiam Stadium on Wethdral Road, Owerri.

4. Asiwaju’s Brother Confirms His Death after Initial Denial

The death of Lagos businessman, Mike Asiwaju has been confirmed by his elder brother, Segun Akintola days after his brother, Dapo Asiwaju denied that he had died on Twitter.

According to Segun, “When I called Asiwaju’s line, a policeman picked the call. He asked me to come to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Panti. On getting there, the policeman said my brother’s corpse had been deposited in the morgue.

The deceased reportedly took his own life at a hotel in FESTAC, Lagos State.

5. Onnoghen’s Suspension Prompts PDP to Suspend Campaign

Nigeria’s opposition, PDP said it has suspended its election campaigns for 72 hours after the chief justice of the country Walter Onnoghen was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We are suspending our campaign for 72 hours,It is our hope that President Buhari will listen to the voice of all lovers of democracy the world over and restore democracy in Nigeria immediately and without qualifications.” PDP’s national chairman, Uche Secondus said.

6.NAF Destroy Terrorists’ Hideout in Borno

The Nigerian Air Force says its Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole, has destroyed a terrorists’ hideout and neutralised some of them at Kaicungul, a settlement about 100Km North-West of Monguno, in Northern Borno.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, disclosed this in a statement.

According to the Air Commodore, the operation was conducted on 25th January, following credible intelligence that the village was used as a rendezvous point for terrorists before launching their attacks on unsuspecting Nigerian troops.

7. Charlyboy, Protesters to Sit at US Embassy until CJN Onnoghen’s Suspension is Reversed

Hundreds of protesters made up of civil society leaders, lawyers and opposition party members have stormed the United States embassy in Abuja on Saturday.

Their demand was that the U.S intervenes in the recent “constitutional crisis” sparked by President Buhari with his removal of CJN Walter Onnoghen masked in the name of suspension.

Recall that the president has appointed Justice Tanko Muhammad as acting CJN to replace Onnoghen.

The group of protesters led by CUPP spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, Comrade Ariyo and Charlyboy, announced that they would continue sitting at the US embassy until their demand for the immediate reversal of suspended Onnoghen is met.

The group also called on the NBA to announce a total shut down on Monday and ban their lawyer from making any court appearance.

8. UK Reacts to CJN Onnoghen’s Suspension by Buhari

The British High Commission has joined the train of well-meaning Nigerians and Non-Nigerians to openly condemn the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen by President Buhari.

A statement by the mission on Saturday said it has received a wide range of information from reliable sources on the constitutional credibility of President Buhari’s suspension of the CJN.

“We respect Nigeria’s sovereign authority and its right to adjudicate on constitutional provisions but as friends of the Nigerian people, we are compelled to observe that the timing of this action, so close to national elections, gives cause for concern,” the statement read.

9. EU Condemns Onnoghen’s Suspension, Says Voters Must be Able to Have Confidence in the Judiciary

The European Union has joined in the list of friends of Nigeria and lovers of democracy to condemn the suspicious process and timing of the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The European Union Election Observation Mission, EU EOM, on Nigeria’s 2019 general elections in a statement signed by its Press and Public Outreach Officer, Sarah Fradgley on Saturday said the suspension of CJN Onnoghen with barely 20 days to the presidential election raises a lot of questions and suspicions.

The statement reads, “The EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) is very concerned about the process and timing of the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Walter Onnoghen, on 25 January.

Continuing, it said: “With 20 days until the presidential and National Assembly elections, political parties, candidates and voters must be able to have confidence in the impartiality and independence of the judicial system.

10. Senate Calls Emergency Session over Buhari’s Untimely Suspension of Onnoghen

The Senate will reconvene on Tuesday to discuss the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria barely 20days to the presidential elections.

Also, the National Assembly will hold a leadership meeting on Sunday during which a stand will be taken against President Buhari’s untimely suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The Senate had previously adjourned sitting until February 19, after the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
