Brighton Vs Derby County FA Cup 16th February Review

Ashley Cole first goal in the FA Cup for Derby County couldn’t help them scrape past an impressive Brighton with Derby falling to a 2-1 defeat to the Seagulls.

Brighton have lunged themselves into the FA Cup last eight for the second successive season as they thumped their counterparts to a 2-1 victory.

The Seagulls got off well with first half strikes from Anthony Knockaert and Jurden Locadia putting them in front.

However, a goal from Ashley Cole in the 81st minute seemed to give Derby County a hope and a lifeline but that didn’t count in the end as Frank Lampard’s side crashed from English’s most elite competition.

Derby County who have the worst record in English top-flight when they last played in the Premier League threw everything they had against Brighton in the final minutes, but the Seagulls held on to a quarter-final finish quite well.

Brighton and Hove Albion Boss, Chris Hughton after the match said that nobody would have given his side the benefit of doubt that they could come out with a win but that they ended up doing the unthinkable.

“Overall, I’m very happy because we’re through to the next round, which is the most important thing. For us to get to the quarter-finals, it’s a big thing for this football club. We’ll see who we get when the draw comes, but we’re here and that’s what counts.

“I thought we were good in that first half period, but we were up against a talented Derby side and we made hard work of it in the end.

“They’re a team that had come back from two goals before. They made changes and made it hard for us, but there wouldn’t be anybody that thinks we didn’t deserve to go through.” , Chris Hughton said.
