Buhari Lauds Super Falcons for Emerging WAFU Champion

  • President Buhari urges officials and players to stay focused.
  • Falcons won the tournament on penalties.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday congratulated the national women team. Super Falcons for putting up a superlative performance that saw them emerged as 2019 WAFU Women’s Cup Champions, with an unbeaten record throughout the tournament.

Super Falcons beat their host Ivory Coast to the trophy on penalties 5-4 after they had played a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Having dominated the game in the opening proceedings, the  Dame Elephantes took the lead through Ange Koko Nguessan’ s stunning free kick.

Despite holding on to their lead with some dogged defending in hopes of lifting the title on home soil, Nigeria equalised through Uchenna Kanu in the closing stages of the encounter.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity in a statement commended the ladies for their discipline and focus.

“President Buhari commends the Falcons for their fighting spirit and resplendent skills evidenced in teamwork, discipline and focus, which enabled them to defeat the Ivorian Dame Elephantes at the finals of the championship.

“The President extols all officials and management of the team, led by Thomas Dennerby, for their sacrifice, commitment and diligence in winning the championship.

The President also urged the Nigeria Football Federation to give the team the needed support ahead of the world cup which will be held in France.

“As the team prepares for the forthcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, President Buhari urges officials and players to stay focused and unleash the same zeal that won the WAFU Women’s Cup Champions.”
