Buhari Sad As Series of Bomb Blasts, Attacks Leave Many Christians Dead

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the horrific attacks on several churches, hotels in Sri Lanka on the holy day of Easter and the renewed communal clashes among various communities in Nigeria.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Sunday in a statement said Buhari extended his deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Declaring his support for the victims of terrorism all over the world “because we know and understand this harrowing inhuman activity, the President said Nigeria stands with the people of Sri Lanka at this terrible moment.

He urged the authorities not to spare ”the wicked elements behind these mischievous attacks.”

‘Not the solution’

In another development, Buhari, who also expressed sadness over the renewed communal clashes among various communities in the country, declared that violent clashes and its attendant bloodshed were unacceptable.

According to the president, the latest violent clashes between Jukuns and Tivs in Taraba State, and Fulani, Genjon and Bachama in Adamawa State resulting in arson, injuries and deaths is needless.

While condemning the acts, President Buhari said violence and bloodshed for whatever reason, especially when it is coming as the nation celebrates Easter, with all the lessons of love and peace for humanity said it is not the solution to misunderstanding among people.

“Once we abandon reason and good judgement, we are giving violence the chance to take over and make a bad situation more complicated and difficult to resolve.’’

While noting that the primary initiative for ending violence once and for all must originate from the local actors involved in these clashes, president Buhari said that he has mandated a religious group which has successfully been stitching up broken relationships between several communities in Plateau State to work with security agencies to take up the challenges of reconciling the communities in Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa States.

He also said that he has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons to scale up their efforts in bringing succour to displaced people.

He also said the immediate intervention by the military, which has brought calm back to communities, and assured that his administration will not rest on its oars to provide security for all Nigerians, and will at the same time engage in dialogue with local stakeholders in order to get to the root of the crises.
