Coronavirus: UEFA Champions And Europa League Finals Suspended Indefinitely

The finals of Europe’s elite competition, the UEFA Champions and Europa league will be postponed owing to the Coronavirus pandemic.

This announcement was made formal by the organizers, UEFA. The Women’s Champions League has as well being postponed.

This decision was a widely expected one given the widespread impact of the pandemic. It’s now being acted upon by a group set up by UEFA in response to the crisis.

This group chaired by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin comprised representatives from clubs and leagues across Europe. The decision was arrived at in a video conference call connecting all members. However, no decision has been taken on an alternative date when it can be played.

“The working group will analyse the options available,” read a UEFA statement. “The group has already begun its examination of the calendar. Announcements will be made in due course.”

The final of the Champions League was initially scheduled for Saturday May 30 at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, but that date will now be shifted to a much later date.

The Europa League final was scheduled for an earlier date in Wednesday May 27 and was to be played in the Polish city of Gdansk. The Women’s Champions League final on the other hand was to be held in Viola Park in Vienna, Austria on May 24.

UEFA had earlier in the month made the decision to shift Euro 2020 to the summer of next year in a bid to give European leagues ample time to complete their respective leagues.

Several football leagues across Europe and across the world have already been postponed to contain the spread of the Coronavirus.

A stop was put to the Europa and Champions Leagues at the last-16 stage with 14 of those ties still left to be played.

The Women’s Champions League still had about eight games to be played in the quarter finals before it was suspended.
