COVID-19: Another Chinese City Bans Residents from Eating Dots And Cats
The government of Zhuhai, another Chinese city has banned its residents from eating dogs and cats.
The authorities gave the order with a new law in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Zhuhai is bordering Macau with a population of 1.7 million. The government issued the order in line with a government’s proposal which lists dogs as ‘companion animals’, an official told state media.

Shenzhen, situated across the Pearl River estuary from Zhuhai had earlier banned pet meat from the dining table.
According to reports, the two cities, both in the southern province of Guangdong, will enforce the ban from May 1.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Yong Ling, the supervisor of the legal affairs committee of the Standing Committee of People’s Congress of Zhuhai Municipality, said lawmakers must adhere to the country’s Directory of Genetic Resources of Livestock and Poultry to decide what types of meat is legal to be traded and eaten. The move was made because dogs and cats were not included a drafted version of the directory.
Yong further revealed that offenders will face a fine of up to 20 times the value of the meat.

The move is part of a wider ban on the trading of wild animals in Zhuhai to ensure food safety in response to the coronavirus crisis.
The city will also prohibit all restaurants, hotels and farms from selling exotic meat from May 1.
