COVID-19 Nigeria Update

Good morning. Here is an update on COVID-19 in Nigeria today, April 20, 2020.

The additional eighty-six new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria have taken the total number of cases to 627.

From the eighty-six, seventy are in Lagos, seven in FCT, three in Katsina, three in Akwa Ibom, two in Jigawa one in Bauchi and Borno respectively as at 11:50 pm 19th April 2020.  one hundred and seventy (170) patients have recovered and discharged while twenty-one has died.

The breakdown of the cases state by state shows that Lagos, which is the epicenter has 376, out of which ninety-two have been discharged and fourteen have died.  Others are FCT- 88, Kano- 36, Osun- 20, Oyo- 16, Edo- 15, Ogun- 12, Kwara- 9, Katsina- 12, Bauchi- 7, Kaduna- 6, Akwa Ibom- 9, Delta- 4, Ekiti- 3, Ondo- 3, Enugu- 2, Rivers-2, Niger- 2, Benue- 1, Anambra- 1, Borno- 1, and Jigawa- 2.

NCDC hails Wike for showing commitment

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has hailed Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike for showing leadership in the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The government agency said stakeholders must work together to reopen the economy without endangering the population, noting the lockdown could not continue indefinitely.

Director-General of NCDC Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, who spoke when he led officials to the Government House, Port Harcourt, said Rivers was important in the fight against the virus.
