UNN Activities Shot Down As ASUU Join Nationwide Strike
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka has shut down academic activities as they officially join the nationwide ASUU strike. The UNN branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has finally joined the ongoing strike embarked by the National body of the union in a bid to strong-arm the government to implement the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the union in 2012, 2013 and 2017. In press conference shortly after the meeting of the UNN body of the union on Wednesday, the chairman, Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Abada said the strike is total and indefinite until the Federal government yields to their demands.
ASUU Strike Paralyses UI, FUTO, UNILAG, LASU
As the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on its indefinite strike on Tuesday, academics activities have come to a standstill in the University of Ibadan, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, and Federal University of Technology, Owerri. Meanwhile, the student populace of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have been thrown into a dilemma following the division amidst lecturers on embarking on the ASUU strike.
Despite the stance of the branch’s chairman on the continuation of the strike, some lecturers have vowed to continue working.
Senate To Engage ASUU, FG Over Strike
DrThe Senate, on Tuesday, has mandated the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Jibrin Barau, APC, Kano North, to as a matter of urgency have a meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu and the leadership of ASUU to have a common ground to resolving the matter.
Speaking on this issue, Senator Lawan noted that the strike would have dire consequences on the populace as the country was already on the verge of economic and political calamity if the purposed strike goes through. In addition to this, the Senate has called on all concerned stakeholders to sheath their swords and forge new agreements.
