EFL Cup: Manchester City Secure 3-1 Win Over Southampton

Manchester City have secured passage into the next round of the EFL Cup following a 3-1 win over Southampton.

Although, the Saints managed to restore some pride following their devastating loss to Leicester City over the weekend, they were still no match for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Sergio Aguero found the net twice as the Citizens made light work of their opponents.

Before the interval, Aguero and Otamendi had already put City sitting in a comfortable position with their goals.

Aguero then scored his second of the night 11 minutes after the restart to give City a good head start.

Two impressive saves from Claudio Bravo looked to have ended the Saints hopes of finding a consolation goal. However, Jack Stephens found the net with a beautiful header some 15 minutes before the final whistle.

Southampton could do little to nothing to stop Nicolas Otamendi’s opener. The Argentine rose highest between Jan Bednarek and Oriol Romeu to head home in the 20th minute.

Aguero should have found the net minutes later from a close-range freekick effort, but, he rewrote his wrongs when he slotted the ball home from a Kyle Walker’s cross.

Manchester City then added their third for the night after Aguero reacted quickest to slot home a deflected Riyad Mahrez’s shot.

While Claudio Bravo couldn’t keep Jack Stephens out to secure a clean sheet, the Citizens still comfortably picked up the much needed victory.

The defending champions now look the likeliest to retain their crown with two of top teams in Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea set to head out of the competition on Wednesday.

Manchester City gave room for their youngsters to perform. One of those is Tommy Doyle, 18-year-old son of former Man City player, Mike Doyle.

The youngster showed promise and looked comfortably playing alongside Foden and Silva.
