Enrique Steps Down From Role As Spain National Football Coach

Luis Enrique has stepped down from his role as coach of the Spanish National team due to ‘personal reasons’ thought tone family problems leaving his assistant Robert Moreno in charge of the La Roja till Euro 2020.

The former Barcelona gaffer was absent in the last International break but had continued his role as team coach from a distance and in a meeting held at his home in May the Spanish Football Federation had decided to wait for him.

The situation of things looked rougher for him in the last few days making him leave the post. This decision of his was announced in a hurriedly called press conference held at the RFEF’s Las Rozas HQ on Wednesday afternoon by the federation president, Luis Rubiales, who described the situation as a “moment of tremendous difficulty for family reasons”.

Enrique who wanted his family situation to be handled with strict confidence was forced to abandon the national team setup the night before Spain faced Malta on 26 March. Having taken charge of the La Roja’s game against Norway he rushed home immediately after with members of the squad sending messages of support for the manager with the consciousness of the seriousness of the situation, however, Enrique has been unable to make a return to the setup since then.

“We had a meeting in Barcelona [in mid-May] and we decided to wait and not take any hasty decisions,” said José Molina, the RFEF’s sporting director.

“In the last few days there has been a change from Luis and he decided to leave because he can’t do the job the way he would have liked.”
