Essence Magazine Lauds Work Of Four Nollywood Actresses

In the February edition of the Essence Magazine titled ‘Black Women Take Over The Movies’, the editorial crew of the magazine takes a look at several women dictating the pace in the movie world. Our discussion centers on the featured Nigerian women.

One of those lauded for their heroics in the movie world by the UK magazine is our very own Genevieve Nnaji and this is for reasons not far-fetched.

Genevieve, who has been active in the Nollywood industry for over two decades, made her directional debut at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival with the movie ‘Lion Heart’. Lion Heart went on to break all local box office records and win the hearts of many both home and abroad.

It is for this reason that streaming giants, Netflix, could not resist the thoughts of obtaining worldwide rights for the movie, making it the company’s first original film from Nigeria.

Second feature is Kemi Adetiba who’s made all the headlines lately. Her works are honed to perfection and deserve all the praises they attract as they have shattered lots of box office records.

Her first comedy movie, Wedding Party, ushered her into the fellowship of the one-million-naira club – making her the first woman to do so.

Her sophomore movie, King of Boys didn’t disappoint either as it became the first non-comedy Nollywood movie to cross the 100-million-naira club.

Tope Oshin pushed the boundaries even further with her movie, UpNorth. The movie takes us away from cliché storylines and brings us an interesting feel to what Nollywood can offer.

UpNorth features a young rebellious heir who goes outside the city of Lagos for his mandatory National Youth Service Corps programme.

Chioma Ude gives a glimmer of hope to aspiring movie producers, film makers and acting enthusiasts.

The diva who’s the face behind the Africa International Film Festival, has sent several young Nigerians abroad for film training and fund-raising. “For me, it’s about giving to the industry and developing it”- seems to be her watchword – as quoted by Essence Magazine
