– Says committee would present a framework that would capture the needs of albinos.

The Federal Government has inaugurated a 14-man technical committee to review the National Policy on Albinism.

The Ministry of Education, which constituted the committee on Wednesday said the review of the policy would “facilitate and improve the lives of persons with albinism through access to social services such as education, healthcare and others”.

The committee is co-chaired by the ministry’s Director of Basic Education Services, Lami Amodu, and President of the Albinos Foundation in Nigeria, Jake Epelle.

Sonny Echono, the Permanent Secretary, who inaugurated the team on behalf of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said the policy was in conformity with the United Nations’ efforts to assist persons with albinism and provide them an enabling environment.

According to him, the review of the policy is necessary at this time because of the emerging issues and challenges confronting albinos in Nigeria.

He also noted that the review will improve the lives of persons with albinism through access to social services such as education, health care, employment and reduce the stigma and discrimination.

“Reviewing the policy will facilitate adequate planning and allocation of resources to albinism issues, empower persons with albinism and address the basic health and educational needs of persons with albinism, especially children.”

He said the committee would present a framework that would capture the needs of albinos to enable the government to close the gap on issues relating to albinism and disability in the country.

“The 14-man committee that has been constituted is saddled with reviewing the existing policy to conform to international best practices with emerging issues.

“It will ensure that all critical stakeholders are carried along to close the gap on issues relating to albinism and disability.

“It will also address the issues of non-implementation of policies and as well present a workable framework that will capture the current needs of persons with albinism,” he added.
