Fire Razes Five Buildings, Scores of Shanties in Ebute Metta

A report reaching us indicates that at least five buildings and scores of shanties were razed on Friday at Oko Baba plank market at Jebba, Ebute Metta, Lagos Mainland.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in one building but spread to other buildings and shanties in the area. Attempts are still being made by firefighters to douse the fire. They were also being assisted by residents of the area who trooped out in their hundreds in putting out the fire.

An unconfirmed report says effort of the firefighters to douse the fire had yielded no results.

This has made residents of the area start evacuating their properties as the fire team continues to battle with the fire.

Speaking on the incident, Nosa Okunbor, State’s emergency spokesman revealed that the fire started from Kano Street in the area. With several shanties razed, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

“However, the intensity of the fire has spread to the adjoining buildings. No loss of life nor injury sustained but properties worth fortune had been destroyed.

“LRT, LASG fire, Yaba LEMC and Police are responders at the scene of incident working together to curtail the spread of the fire. Operation ongoing,” he adds.
