Below is the full statement released by the Governor,

In our bid to find a lasting solution to the perennial flooding affecting Ijebu-Ode & its environs, we visited the affected areas for proper inspection & on-site assessment with a view of having first hand information of how some of the streets have been ravaged by flood.

We were at Igbeba, Paramount, Moborode, Italapo, Degun and Imowo Ibadan roads within Ijebu Ode metropolis. One of the biggest complaint we’ve had is that most of the homes are being flooded once it rains. At times, people can’t even get into their homes till past midnight.

From our preliminary assessment, the biggest challenge we have in Ijebu Ode is that the drains that crisscross the town are small concrete drains that are also covered hence they don’t allow for regular de-silting and clearance.

Ijebu-Ode will require a bigger and open drainage that can easily accommodate the volume of floods in the area and that also be easily maintained. Consequently, we are going to have a comprehensive plan aimed at resolving these problems once and for all.

The drains that serves as carriage will be re-designed to accommodate large volumes of flood water. While sympathising with those whose homes were overtaken by the flood, we reiterated the need for our people to desist from throwing refuse into the drainages and always clean the ones close to them, as this would allow for easy flow of water and save the roads from being washed away. I enjoin residents to exercise patience with the government as we find lasting solution to the menace.
