Grammys 2019 – This is America Wins While Falz Cover Remains Banned

The 61st Grammy Awards aired on Sunday and iDONSABI.com presents you a list of the big winners with our lenses on Childish Gambinos ‘This is America’ and Falz cover ban.

In an award ceremony dominated by female performers and presenters, women were seen to win popular categories.

Cardi B became the first woman to win the best rap album category as a solo artist subtly putting a rest to comparisons between her and self-acclaimed Queen of Rap, Nicki Minaj who has never won a Grammy for herself.

Another woman, Kacey Musgraves went home with the Album of the Year category, and three other Grammy awards for Best country solo performance, Best Country album and Best country song. Lady Gagas Shallow in the movie A Star is Born won two of the awards.

The Bone of Contention

Childish Gambinos This is America won four awards. This win as expected has sparked reactions from several Nigerians who felt that the NBC didnt appreciate Falzs work in This is Nigeria and banned the songs art cover instead.

Recall that the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission banned the song on the basis that the line This is Nigeria, everybody be criminal was too vulgar to be allowed on airwaves.

Some others allege however that the ban comes from the increasing pressure from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) on the NBC to ban the song after the group said that the videos portrayal of the Fulani tribe and women dancing in hijabs were negative and had the potential of bringing about religious crisis.

Falz in the song tackled the issues that plague Nigeria including government corruption, unemployment and electrical blackouts.

@SemilooreAkoni “This is America by Childish Gambino won a Grammy while This is Nigeria by Falz got banned”

A reply to that thread by @Themofeh read “Difference between a stagnant country and a country that wants to move forward”

That said, it must be pointed out that the video remains available on Youtube and has already racked up about 15 million views as of November 2018.

Falz ‘This is Nigeria’ song gained International recognition when ace hip-hop star Diddy shared it on social media.
