How Supreme Court Sacked Ihedioha And Declared Uzodinma Winner

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, surprised many Nigerians after sacking governor Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State and declared Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the March 9 governorship poll.

In a unanimous judgment by a seven-man panel of justices that was led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad, the apex court held that Ihedioha who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was not duly elected.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun who read the lead judgment had earlier void the candidature of Uche Nwosu who lost the primary election to Uzodinma.

The Supreme Court, therefore, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Ihedioha and a fresh Certificate of Return should be issued to Uzodinma forthwith.

It also ordered that he should be sworn-in immediately as the governor of Imo state.

From the judgment, Uzodinma polled 236,600 votes from 388 Polling Units spread across the State which were wrongfully excluded during collation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

So, the Supreme Court gave him back the PUs, total votes which surpassed that of Ihedioha.
