1 litre of water

Sweatner

Steps for Preparing Homemade Soy Milk

Clean the soya beans and soak in water for at least 10 hours. Most people soak overnight. Removing the hulls makes the extraction process more efficient.

Grind the soaked soya beans and water in a blender. Sieve the mixture with a cheese cloth and separate the milk. The insoluble material which remains on the sieve can be used as an ingredient for making tofu.

Heat the soy milk till boiling point and continue boiling for about 5 to 10 minutes. After cooling, add sugar and the soy milk is ready and can be kept in the fridge for 3 days.

In the preparation of soya milk, some prefer not to dehull the soya bean and use it straight up like that. This will still give a rich tasting dink so it really doesn’t make any difference.  You will still get a nice tasty soya milk.

A trick to apply to keep that “beany taste” at bay when making your homemade soya milk is to cook the beans before mixing. This will destroy the enzymes that produce that beany flavor. Another way to get rid of the beany flavour is to whisk the soya milk while it is still boiling.

To spice up your drink a little bit, you can  add a bit of vanilla flavour. You can also experiment with other flavours and even light spices like ginger if you like. This will give the drink a fresh taste and also mask the beany taste.
