‘I Donated My Salaries for 8 Years as Governor’ – Aregbesola

Immediate past Governor of Osun Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola made a shocking revelation on Sunday when he recealed that he voluntarily gave up his official salaries totalling N114, 743,197.4 million for the eight years he served as governor.

Aregbesola revealed this during a lecture he delivered at the 65th Anniversary and Old Students’ Re-union of Manuwa Memorial Grammar School (MMGS), Iju-Odo, Ondo State, where he stressed that being productive is vital to the existence and survival of individuals and a nation.

Aregbesola advised Nigerians, especially youths to avoid living above their means by priotising their needs above wants. Aregbesola pointed out that he was able to donate his salaries for 8 years as a result of this principle. He noted that when he was governor, all his needs were paid for by the state as he had no child in school to feed and sponsor.

Aregbesola pointed out that unlike most Nigerian Governors, he did not build house in Osogbo, Ilesa, Lagos or in any other place throughout his 8 years as governor.

He informed the audience that priotising needs above wants would enhance investment and productivity in a country.

Aregbesola said that investment and productivity should be taught from primary school to the university level in order for Nigerians, most especially youths to have this type of mindset of prioritising needs.

Aregbesola also challenged Nigerian workers to promote the culture of productivity more than seeing salary as a basic right. He poised that workers worrying more about their salaries at the end of the month rather than being concerned about low-productivity is a serious challenge in Nigeria that needs to be examined.

Aregbesola also lamented about the deteroriating state of the educational sector in Nigeria, but saluted the efforts of the alumni association for to the development of the college and urged them to double their efforts.
