Former Super Eagles striker, Jay Jay Okocha is faced with a three-count charge for tax evasion and failure to furnish his return of income.
According to a report by The Guardian, the 42-yr-old’s arrest was issued by a Lagos High Court in Igbosere. This order was following his refusal to show up in court even with the charges levelled against him made known to him.
The judicial system made sure not to give the former Nigerian International any preferential treatment for his achievement whilst adorning the green and white jersey for the Super Eagles in local and International competitions alike.
A warrant for his arrest has already been issued and is expected to take effect immediately. According to the report, the case was brought forward to the court on the 6th of June,2017 by one Dr. Jide Martins with the accused invited to the court for hearing on the 5th of October, 2017, only for him not to show up.
The case was reported to have been adjourned on several occasions without the defendant honouring the court’s invite.
Justice Adedayo Akintoye who presides over the case has now issued a first warrant for Okocha. The judge is reported to have issued a warrant for the arrest of the former Nigerian International on January 29 before thereafter adjourning it to February 29.
It was however gathered that by the 19th of February, the prosecution had not effected Okocha’s arrest forcing the hands of the judge to adjourn till April 15 and order that the warrant is effected by then with Okocha having violated,
“Sections 56 (a) and (b) of the Lagos State Revenue Administration Law No.8, 2006, as well as Section 94(1) of the Personal Income Tax Act Cap P8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”
Meanwhile, iDONSABI.com revealed that Okocha’s former teammate Nwankwo Kanu has raised alarms over a burgling incident at his apartment. He alleged that his apartment had been burgled with his trophies, medals and other valuables carted away.
