– The suspended CJN get bailed on Self Recognition

Latest reports have made it known that the suspended Chief Judge of Nigeria CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen finally appeared before the Code of Conduct Tribunal CCT today having been absent before the tribunal for more than three times.

Justice Walter Onnoghen, who was suspended by the Federal Government based on an order from the CCT on the 25th of January based on 6 charges against him over non-declaration of assets pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The suspended CJN was also present at the tribunal with his lawyer Chris Uche SAN, who asked that the bench warrant issued against Justice Walter  Onnoghen be discharged since he appeared before the CCT voluntarily.

Prior to this, the Code of Conduct Tribunal had issued a arrest warrant to the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Service DSS after the suspended CJN  refused to appear before it.

However, while delivering ruling on the application, the tribunal Chairman, Danladi Umar stated that the bench warrant earlier issued was suspended.

He said, “The bench warrant earlier issued, since the defendant made himself available voluntarily without the execution of the bench warrant, the tribunal hereby set aside the warrant on the condition that the defendant must henceforth make himself available throughout the trial.”

According to the reports, Justice Walter Onnoghen remained on his feet during the trial while in the dock despite the fact that he was giving the privilege to sit.

He was however granted bail on self recognition.

A report disclosed that the case has been adjourned till after the General elections, March 11th to be precise.

At the moment, Justice Mohammed Tanko remains the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
