#JusticeforChima: ‘We Were Given Wrong Information’ – Police Tenders Apology Over Dead Mechanic

The River State Police Command has apologized over the false information they gave on the autopsy of Chima Ikwunado, a mechanic who died in their cell after he was accused of robbery ad cultism.

Chima died in their custody in Port Harcourt, Rivers state Nigeria. They had claimed he died of a high sugar level.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nnamdi Omoni told newsmen that he gave out the information he was given by the Police Special Unit E-Crack Commander that autopsy on carried out on Chima shows that he died of the high sugar level, not because of torture.

Dr. Musa Steven, one of the pathologists who conducted an autopsy on Chima Ikwunado dead body, revealed that there was no previous professional cut on Chima’s body to show that an autopsy was carried out on him.

“Police can’t obstruct justice on this matter. When the incident happened, we called SP Benson Adetuyi to ask him what happened, he said they were investigating a case of armed robbery after they arrested the suspects and took them to the station where they detained and question them.”

He added that during the interrogation, Chima died in their custody. They took him to the hospital and later discovered that he died over a high sugar level.

“I am quoting him as he said it. When he was summoned by the Commissioner of Police, he said the same thing. When the Force PRO called him and the team went to Abuja, he said the same thing. So, we are shocked when an autopsy of the day proved that there was nothing os such,” Omoni said.

While calming o the people to be calm, he said the Commissioner of Police will address the media after the autopsy report come out and every officer involved will face the law.
