1. Deadly Ebola Virus Found in Bat in Liberia

A group of scientist have found what will be the first proof of the deadly Ebola virus in a bat in Liberia. This is the first time the virus was found in a bat in West Africa.

This came after sampling hundreds of bats over the past two years. Scientists of Liberia’s health ministry and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) detected the Zaire Ebola virus in one bat, NPHIL director general, Tolbert Nyenswah told journalists in the capital Monrovia. He said that all other bat tested negative except for one.

But the finding was nonetheless very significant, as researchers believe it suggests that bats may be a natural host for Ebola.

2. Microsoft’s Bing Back Online in China

Microsoft’s Bing search engine has been restored in mainland China after days of blackout that prompted users to fear the search engine had been blocked by Chinese censors.

The company’s spokesman said: “We can confirm that Bing was inaccessible in China, but service is now restored”. The spokesman man said the blackout happened because of an accidental technical error and not censorship.

Many initially believed that the government must have directed the block because of the current restrictive censorship regime.

Bing is only allowed to operate in China because it agreed to delete any content classified as offensive or threatening to China’s ruling Communist party.

3. US Send Asylum Seekers Back To Mexico

The US government has sent the first group of asylum seekers back to Mexico through the border city of Tijuana as part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s hardened immigration policy.

The United States sent non-Mexican migrants who crossed the U.S. southern border back to Mexico while their asylum requests are being processed in U.S. immigration courts.

4. Macedonia and Greece Settle 27- Year Name Dispute

Greece’s parliament voted to back a historic agreement which has ended a 27-year dispute over its northern neighbour’s name, Macedonia.

Despite wide spread protests and heavy opposition from the Greece public, Greece’s Parliament in Athens agreed by 153 votes to 146 to approve the name, “Republic of North Macedonia”.

Greece rejected Macedonia’s name since its independence in 1991 on account of a region in Greece called Macedonia.

5. Michel Legrand, Oscar-Winning Composer Dies

French Oscar-winning composer Michel Legrand has died aged 86. Michel Legrand worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis and Barbra Streisand.

Michel Legrand won Academy Awards for the much-covered hit The Windmills of Your Mind and for his music for Summer of ’42 and Yentl, died early on Saturday in Paris.

6. Osaka Beats Kimora, Becomes New World Number One

Japanese fourth seed and US Open champion Osaka Naomi  battled past Czech eighth seed Petra Kvitova 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-4 to win her first Australian Open crown and become the new world number one.

Osaka made it two Grand Slam titles in a row after a see- sawing 2hr 27min match.

The hard-fought victory made Osaka the first Asian, male or female, to hold the world’s top ranking, taking over from Romania’s Simona Halep.

7. Facebook to Close Down Its Photo App On 25th February

Facebook is giving up on its photo organizer app more than three years after launching it. The app makes it easier for users to store photos from phones by creating photo albums.

“We’re ending support for the Moments app, which we originally launched as a place for people to save their photos,” said Rushabh Doshi, Facebook’s director of product management.

“We know the photos people share are important to them so we will continue offering ways to save memories within the Facebook app.”

It is not clear why Facebook has decided to pull Moments, though it is likely to be a result of lack of popularity.

8. Kanye West Sues Jay-Z’s Roc-A- Fella Records over Unpaid Royalties

American artiste, Kanye West has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Jay-Z ‘s Roc-A-Fella Records and EMI Publishing over unpaid publishing royalties.

Reports say that the law suit was based on unpaid publishing royalties based on agreements they signed in 2003.

 9. Facebook to Integrate Whatsapp, Instagram and Messenger

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg is planning to integrate WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

Though all three will remain stand-alone apps, they will also be linked so messages can travel between the different services.

The process is expected to be completed by the end of 2019 or early next year.

10. Renault Names New Leaders After Ghosn Resignation

Michelin boss Jean-Dominique Senard has been appointed as  renault new chairman, after Carlos Ghosn was forced to resign following a financial scandal that has rocked the French carmaker, Renault’s alliance with Japan’s Nissan.

Deputy chief executive, Thierry Bollore was appointed to take over Ghosn’s other Renault role as full chief executive.

Renault- Nissan leadership crisis that erupted after Carlos Ghosn was arrested on 19th November in Japan.
