UEFA have announced a shortlist for the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions league positional awards with the awards set to honour the best players in the goalkeeping, defence, midfield and forward department of last campaign’s Champions League.
The awards will be presented during the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on Thursday 29 August.
The jury which took charge of the player selection comprised the coaches of all participating 32 clubs in the group stage of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League, together with 55 journalists from each of UEFA’s 55 member associations, and selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group. It must be noted that coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.
Amongst contenders spread across all positions are Champions league winners, Liverpool quintet – Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane.
Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo also made the list while the Portuguese’s main rival, Lionel Messi who had a stellar season with the Blaugranas last term also made the list of nominations.
According to the nominations list, the Lilywhites also had two names up there in Christian Eriksen contending for the midfield category and Hugo Lloris for best goalkeeper.
Spurs took out Ajax in the semi-finals of the competition after a daring hatrick from Lucas Moura dumped the Eredivise side but the Dutch giants can take solace in the fact that a couple of their thrilling youngsters have been nominated.
Frenkie de Jong and De Ligt who have both made a switch to Barcelona and Juventus respectively were nominated in the midfield and defence categories for helping the young Ajax side to the last eight of the competition knocking out former winners, Real Madrid and Ronaldo’s Juventus enroute.
De Jong and Lionel Messi aren’t the only Barcelona players to be nominated as Marc Andre Ter Stegen also comfortably claims a spot on the list.
