Liverpool Maintain Perfect Start To Season With Win Over Chelsea

Liverpool ran down the clock and held on to a 2-1 win over Chelsea who looked like they were going to level down matters only some minutes from the final whistle.

Jurgen Klopp could be seeing pacing up and down in frustration as the ball kept coming into the box over and over again.

Little wonder he brought in Joe Gomez for Mohammed Salah as he sought to hold on to that slim lead.

Following Manchester City’s severe humiliation of basement club, Watford, Liverpool needed a riposte and they did just that.

The Reds became the first team to win their first six Premier League games in two successive seasons and stretched their record run of league victories to 15 even if they were stretched at times.

Before Kante’s goal, Liverpool were on the front foot terrorising Chelsea’s defence led by the pair of Tomori and David Luiz.

However, they were wasteful in the final third with selfish Mohammed Salah the main culprit.

There was a certain confidence associated with Liverpool’s goals though with both coming from well-worked freekicks.

For the first Mane was fouled by Christensen and Salah rolled the freekick for Trent Alexander-Arnold to roll into the top right corner.

The Blues were also at fault for the second. Cesar Azpilicueta argued he wasn’t guilty of falling over Wijnaldum but the freekick was taking anyway. The freekick was taken short and Andrew Robertson sent in the cross from the left with Roberto Firmino rising highest among Christensen and Tomori to bundle home with a fine header.

Alonso came in for injured Emerson and Christensen had to be replaced by Zouma having clashed with Tomori. It was a bout of calamities for Chelsea.

Well, until Kante gave the visitors a consolation goal after driving towards Liverpool’s goal and sending it far beyond the reach of Adrian.
