Liverpool Regain Top Spot As Salah Scores His 21st Of The Season In Win Over Huddersfield

Liverpool regained top spot on the Premier league standings with a 5-0 mauling of basement club and already relegated side, Huddersfield Town.

It might have been expected that the Reds did away with a lowly Terriers who have by far being the worst team in the top-flight this term but it is the impeccable manner in which they got that win that could make your hair stand on its ends.

It wasn’t just the forwards who were firing on all cylinders, the fullbacks gave us a peek into what ‘Gegenpressing’ was all about.

There was an interesting subtle battle between Salah and Mane for the Premier League golden boot while the left backs battled for the defender with the most assists for the season.

That said, it was Naby Keita who first got on the scoresheet with only 15 seconds gone on the clock. Keita caught Stankovic in possession before receiving a return ball from Salah and slotting it into the bottom corner.

It was Liverpool’s fastest goal of the Premier League era and it had come via the boots of the never-tiring Naby Keita.

It was at this point that the Terriers knew they were in for a lot of trouble by the high pressing Liverpool. For the Reds, it was a question of how many more can we get to better our goal difference.

Minutes after, Van Dijk took the ball out of defence, marauding forward like a villain on a mission until he sent the ball left to the feet of Andy Robertson (his 10th assist of the season)

The left back then sent in a cross for Sadio Mane to score his 19th for the season. Salah also got on the scoresheet before the break with Trent Alexander-Arnold turning provider with a full-flighted long through pass.

After the break, Liverpool showed no signs of slowing down as Mane temporarily joined Salah on the 20th goal mark after latching on to captain, Jordan Henderson’s cross with another header. That head seems to be doing a lot of magic lately you’d like to think.

Talk of equaling Salah temporarily on the 20-goal mark, Salah got the fifth of the game after tapping a Robertson cross for his 21th goal of the season and 69th for Liverpool – more than any other player has managed in his first 100 games for the Reds.

To think that Robertson, a £7m left-back has provided 11 assists this season is enough reason to wow but putting the fact that Liverpool’s right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold has also provided 10 assists despite missing several games is forcing goose pimples onto the surface of your tender skin.

Liverpool now have the PL’s top scorer, Salah with 21 goals, second-highest, Mane with 20 goals, defenders with most assists and goalkeeper, Alisson, with most clean sheets (20)
What a colourful season this is turning out to be!
