Liverpool Thrash Newcastle To Go Six Points Clear!

Liverpool showed just the stuff they’re made of to their fans, treating them to much action with a 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United at Anfield on Wednesday, further extending their lead at the top of the table.

This win has put Liverpool on 51 points halfway into the season, six points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur who hammered Bournemouth 5-0, and seven clear of champions Manchester City who lost 2-1 at Leicester City.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, who is returning to a club he once won the Champions league with, picked his team with defence in mind, by olaying five at the back.

But defender Jamaal Lascelles mistakenly aet up Dejan Lovren up for the opening goal, carelessly attempted a clearance by heading the ball into the path of the Liverpool centre back, who cracked home a fine half-volley in the 11th minute.

At the 48 minute, Mohamed Salah put Liverpool two up after he scored a penalty which resulted from a foul on him by Paul Dummet.

Liverpool kept up the pressure, and at the 79th minute, a goal came when Xherdan Shaqiri kicked home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s square-play from close range. Fabinho made it 4-0 by heading home Salah’s corner at the 85th minute.

Liverpool’s fans burst into song as news reached the Anfield stands that Manchester City had lost at Leicester, giving the Merseysiders the Christmas gift they wanted as they chase a first league title since 1990.

Speaking after the match, Dejan Lovren said,

“We just focused on ourselves and it’s game by game for us. Every game is a final for us,”

“We need to keep this momentum and after the next couple of games we will see where we are. Every game now matters,” he added.

Rafa Benitez will caught a seemingly frustrated figure and he didnt hide that as the club have little or no money to spend in the transfer window and he has to make signings.

Benitez said after the match,

“Obviously, we play against a very good team but there are two key moments in the game,” the Spanish coach said.

“The first goal we made a mistake, and the second goal (was) a soft penalty that gave them control. For us, it was very difficult to react,” he added.

Liverpool host Arsenal next on Saturday in a heavyweight Premier League clash. Benitez must now lift his side ahead of their visit to Watford on Saturday.
