Local Government Areas in Gombe State

Gombe state is a state in northeast Nigeria. It was created on the 1st of October 1996 and is majorly occupied by the Fulanis in the north and Tangele people in the south. Gombe has a landmass of 18,768km² and is made up of 11 Local Government Areas.

1. Akko Local Government Area

History of Akko Local Government Area

Akko Local Government Area in Gombe state has its headquarters in the town of Kumo. This Local Government Area is occupied by lots of different tribes and is the host Local Government Area of the largest commercial city in Gombe state apart from Gombe city.

Akko Local Government Area has a landmass of 2,627km² and has Umar Muhammed Atiku as its Emir.

Akko Local Government Area occupies the western part of Gombe state. It is bounded by Laltungo and Billiri in the south, Dukku, Kwami and Gombe in the north and Yamaltu and Balanga in the east.

Balanga Local Government Area has its headquarters in Tallase and is made up of 65% waja speaking Muslims. This Local Government Area houses the speakers of the almost extinct Jalaa language and has an area of 1,626km².

Balanga Local Government Area occupies the northwest part of Gombe state. It is bounded by Kaltungo, Shomgom and Akko in the west, and by Yamaltu in the north.

Billiri is both a town and Local Government Area in Gombe. It has its headquarters in Billiri town and an area of 737km². This Local Government Area is not one of the biggest in Gombe state and had a population of 2022,144 in 2006.

This Local Government Area is located in southwest Gombe state. It is bounded by Akko in the north, Shomgom in the south and east and Kaltungo in the north east.

4. Dukku Local Government Area

History of Dukku Local Government Area

Dukku Local Government Area has its headquarters in Dukku town. It is occupied majorly by the Fulani people and came into existence in the 17th century as a city prior to becoming an LGA in Gombe state. With an area of 3,815km², this LGA is one of the biggest in Gombe state.

Dukku occupies the northwestern axis of Gombe state. It is bounded by Akko, Kwami, Funakaye, and Nafada Local Government Areas.

Gombe is both an LGA as well as a major city in Gombe state. This LGA is both the host of the Gombe Lawanti International Airport and the Dadin Kowa water project. Gombe LGA has a landmass of 52km² and is the smallest Local Government Area in Gombe state.
