1. Abak Local Government Area

History of Abak Local Government Area

Abak doubles as an LGA as well as a town in Akwa-Ibom. Prior to becoming an LGA in Akwa-Ibom, Abak was a local government area in Cross Rivers state. Abak has a landmass of 90km² and is occupied by the Annang People.

Eket is both a Local Government Area, an ethnic group and a city in Akwa Ibom state. This LGA has a landmass of 214km² and a major industrial hub in Akwa Ibom state. Eket LGA is host to a lot of infrastructures. Some of them include an airstrip and a stadium complex.

Eket LGA occupies the northern axis of Akwa Ibom state. It also shares borders with Nsit-Ubium in the north, Esit-Eket in the East, and Onira in the west.

Esit-Eket is both a town and a Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom state. This LGA is made up of 10 villages and is believed to be the ancestral home of the Eket people.

4. Essien Udim Local Government Area

History of Essien Udim Local Government Area

Essien Udim LGA was carved out from Ikot Ekpene. It is occupied by eight clans. They include Adiasim, Ikpe, Okon, Nsasak, Ekpeyong Atai, Afaha, Odoro Ikot, and Ukana Ikot Ntuen. The major language that is spoken by people of this LGA is the Anang language.

Essien Udim occupies the western axis of Akwa Ibom state. It is flanked by Obot Afara and Ikot Epkene   at the north, Ika at the southwest, Ikono at the east and Etim Ekpo at the south.

Etim Ekpo Local Government Area was carved out of Anang LGA. It is an LGA that is occupied by Annang speaking people. This LGA is made up of 4 towns and several villages. Also, it has a landmass of 206km².  Residents on this LGA are mostly farmers and also majorly indigenes of Akwa Ibom state.

Etim Ekpo LGA is located at the western axis of Akwa Ibom and is bordered by Ukanafun in the North, Essien-Uddimin the south, Ika in the west and Abak in the east.

This Local Government Area was created in 1976 and is majorly occupied by the Iman Ibo people. Etinan LGA is popular in Akwa Ibom for being rich in agriculture and also for the quality of its arts. This LGA is believed to be one of the most peaceful in Akwa Ibom state.

Ibeno LGA is known to be the LGA with the largest settlement of fishermen in Nigeria. This LGA has its headquarters in Upenekang and was created in 1996 from Uquo- Ibeno LGA. The occupants of Ibeno LGA are majorly speakers of the Ibeno dialect of the very popular Ibibio language.

Ika is an LGA in Akwa Ibom with its headquarters in Urua Inyang. It is an Annang local government area and is made up of 50 villages. This LGA is dominated by the annang people and has the annang language as the dominant language in this LGA.

Nsit Atai has its headquarters at Odot. It was created by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1996. Nsit Atai is made up of 62 villages and has a land mass of 17,000 km². This LGA is dominated by the Ibiobio speaking people of Akwa Ibom, it is also very rich in natural resources such as clay, salt and oil.

Nsit Ubium is made up of two clans. They are; Nsit and Ubium. It also is made up of 31 villages. This LGA was created on the 3rd of May, 1989 from Etinan LGA and has its headquarters in Ikot Edibon. This LGA is drained by the qua Ibo river and has a landmass of 242.942km².

Obot Akara LGA in Akwa Ibom state consists of 3 towns. These towns include Obot Akara, Ikot Abia, and Itu Edino. This LGA has a landmass of 237km² and was created in 1991.

History of Okobo Local Government Area

Okobo LGA was created in 1989 by President Ibrahim Babangida. It is believed that those that are presently in Okobo LGA migrated from present day Arochukwu in Abia state. Okobo LGA has a landmass of 300km² and is made up of seven towns.

23. Onna Local Government Area

History of Onna Local Government Area

Ona LGA got its name from the three clans that make up this LGA. These clans include Oniong, Nnung Ndem and Awa. This LGA is very close to the Atlantic Ocean. As a result of this, most of its residents are fishermen. Ona LGA is rich in oil and gas, it plays host to multinational firms such as Exxon Mobil and Total.

History of Oron Local Government Area

Oron is a major city as well as an LGA in Akwa Ibom state. It is the host LGA of the Oron museum and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria. This LGA has a total landmass of 70km² and comprises of four towns.

Udung Uko is an LGA in Akwa Ibom state which comprises of four towns. This LGA is rich in crude oil, natural gas, salt and clay. Also, fishing and hunting are the major occupations of communities in this LGA.

Ukanafun LGA was carved out check of Opobo and Abak. It is an LGA that was very badly affected by the Nigerian civil war. The Nigerian civil war brought about a slowdown in economic activities in this LGA. Quite unlike many other LGAs in Akwa Ibom, this LGA does not have much going for it.

Urue Offong Oruko LGA is made up of six clans and 33 villages. This LGA has a landmass of 127km² and is a part of the Oro nation. This LGA is blessed with very rich marine life as well as clay deposits. Residents of this LGA are majorly farmers and fishermen.

This LGA shares borders with Mbo, Esit Eket, Okobo, and Udung Uko LGAs. It is located in the south eastern axis of Akwa Ibom state.
