Oil rich Bayelsa sate was carved out of Rivers state in 1996. It is a state in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria and has its capital in Yenagoa. This state is occupied by the Ijaws and is made up of 8 local government areas.

History of Brass Local Government Area

Brass LGA in Bayelsa has its headquarters in Twon Brass. It is an LGA with a coastline of about 90km on the bight of Bonny. This LGA has an area of 1,404km². Although this area is relatively large, most of it is in the Edumanom forest and is not inhabited by people.

Location of Brass Local Government Area

Brass LGA occupies the south and the south western axis of Bayelsa. It is bordered by Southern Ijaw LGA in the north and northwest and Ogbia in the north.

Ekeremor is an LGA in Bayelsa state has its headquarters in Ekeremor town and that shares borders with Delta state. It has a coastline of 60km along the Bight of Bonny. This LGA is occupied majorly by the Ijaws and has an area of 1,810km².

Ekeremor occupies the northwestern part of Bayelsa state. It shares borders with southern Ijaw and Sagboma LGAs

Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA in Bayelsa state has its headquarters in Kaiama. It has a very small area of 361km² which is mostly occupied by the Bayelsa National Forest.

This LGA is located in north eastern Bayelsa. It shares borders with Yenagoa in the north east, east and south and also shares borders with Sagbosa in the north and northwest.

Nembe LGA was created in 1996 and has an area of 760km² which is mostly occupied by the Edumanom National Forest. This LGA has its headquarters in Nembe town.

Location of Nembe Local Government Area

Nembe LGA is almost entirely covered by Brass LGA. It shares borders with Brass LGA in the south northeast and southwest, with Ogbia LGA in the north and southern Ijaw in the Northwest.

History of Ogbia Local Government Area

Ogbia LGA is an LGA in Bayelsa state that has a hand in the Nigerian economy. This is because it is the LGA where oil was first discovered in 1956. This LGA is occupied by the Ogbia people, a subscribe under the Ijaw tribe. Ogbia is the birth LGA of former president, Goodluck Jonathan and has a landmass of 695km.

This LGA is bordered by Yenagoa LGA in the north, Nembe LGA in the south, southern Ijaw LGA in the west and Brass LGA in the northeast.

Sagbama LGA in Bayelsa state has its headquarters in Sagbama town. It is an LGA with an area of 945km². This LGA is not fully occupied by people as it has a large part of it in the Bayelsa National Forest.

Sagbama LGA occupies the north and northeast axis of Bayelsa state. It shares boundaries with Ekeremor in the west, southern Ijaw in the south west, and Yenagoa in the northeast, and Kolokuma/Opokuma in the south.

Southern Ijaw LGA was created in 1996. It has its headquarters in Oporoma and also has a coastline of about 60km along the Bight of Bonny. This LGA is occupied by the Izon people, and was the LGA of former Bayelsa governor Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, and has a landmass of 2,682km², therefore making it the biggest LGA in Bayelsa state.

Location of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area

Southern Ijaw LGA single handedly occupies central Bayelsa. It shares borders with Ekppermor LGA in the northwest, Sagbasa LGA in the north, Brass LGA in the south, Nembe LGA in the southeast and Ogbia LGA in the east.

History of Yenagoa Local Government Area

Yenagoa doubles as an LGA in Bayelsa and the state capital of Bayelsa state. This LGA is occupied majorly by the Ijaws and has Epie-Atissa, Gbarian, Ekpetiama, Buseni and Zarama as some of the languages regularly spoken by its indigenes. Yenagoa LGA was created in 1996 and has a landmass of 706km².

This LGA occupies northeast Bayelsa, it is bordered by Ogbia, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Southern Ijaw, and Sagbasa LGAs
