Ekiti state was established in 1996 by General Sani Abacha. Prior to becoming a state, it was part of Ondo state. Ekiti state covers an area of 6,353km² and has Ayodele Fayose as its Governor.

1. Ado Ekiti Local Government Area

Ado Ekiti doubles as a Local Government Area as well as the capital city of Ekiti state. It is occupied by the Ekiti people, a subgroup under the Yoruba tribe. This Local Government Area is the host LGA of Ekiti State University as well Afe Babalola University.

Ado Ekiti Local Government Area has a landmass of 293km² and had a population of 424,340 in 2012.

Ijero is both an LGA and a town in Ekiti state. It has its headquarters in Ijero Ekiti and was created in 1976. The major languages that are spoken by the indigenes of this Local Government Area are Yoruba language and the Ekiti dialect.
