Plateau state was created in 1976 and is located approximately at the middle of Nigeria. Plateau is the 12th biggest state in Nigeria and occupies an area of 30,913km². It has Simon Bako Lalong as its governor and is made up of 17 Local Government Areas.

Bokkos Local Government Area has its headquarters in Bokkos town. It house the Plateau state University and is occupied by Kulere, Ron and Mushere peoples. Bokkos Local Government Area has an area of 1,682km² and had a population of 178,454 in the 2006 census.
