Man City Sign Rodri From Atletico Madrid For £63million

Manchester City have completed the signing of their long-time target, Atletico Madrid’s midfielder, Rodri on a five-year deal for a club record fee put at £63 million.

The 23 year old has now joined the Citizens only one day after Atletico revealed that the player’s release clause had been triggered.

“Manchester City is delighted to announce the signing of Spanish midfielder Rodri,” read a statement on the Citizen’s official website.

The fee paid for Rodri eclipses the fee that was made by City for Algerian, former Leicester City midfielder and PFA Player of the Year recipient, Riyad Mahrez, who the Citizens signed for £60 million last year.

Rodri in a statement said:

“What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I’m looking forward to being part of such a talented squad.

“It’s not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times. It’s a style that excites me, as do the club’s ambitions.”

Atletico Madrid who recently signed Joao Felix from Benfica for a gargantuan sum have gained a considerably large profit from the sale of Rodri after coughing out £20 million last summer to resign the midfielder from fellow Laliga team, Villarreal who got him after Atletico had let him go from their youth ranks on a free.

During his time at the Wanda Metropolitano, he made 47 appearances, netting three times as Diego Simeone’s charge finished second only to Barcelona and above Real Madrid in third place on the La Liga standings.

In the Spanish midfielder, Manchester City have found a permanent long-time replacement for ageing influential defensive midfielder, Fernandinho.

The Citizens struggled in the middle of the park anytime Fernandinho was by the sidelines due to innuries and will be looking to avoid a repeat of that.

City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain who seemed pleased with the signing had this to say:

“Rodri has proven himself to be a hugely talented, young midfielder, who has all the attributes we are looking for,”

“He works hard defensively, makes himself available to receive the ball and uses it well when in possession.

“He is a perfect fit for Pep Guardiola’s team and we are confident he will be a success.”
