Matip Back In Contention For Clash With Manchester United

Joel Matip has insisted that he is fit for Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United.

The Cameroonian has shaken off a knock and hopes to be in contention for the Reds’ game against their biggest rivals.

Liverpool will make a trip to Old Trafford to lock horns with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. They arrive at Manchester top of the table following a perfect start that has seen them claim wins in all their eight games so far.

Jurgen Klopp will be excited to have the big man back in the shape with Matic having missed Liverpool’s games against Red Bull Salzburg and Leicester City as a result.

The defender who came to Anfield on a free transfer has formed a formidable pairing at the back with Van Dijk.

The centre-back who was given the International break to recover returned to training at Melwood with the hope of being in contention for the game at Old Trafford.

“I’m back in training and hopefully I will stay fit,” Matip said on Thursday. “I’m back in training and I feel good. Of course, if I’m needed, I will be there.

“Injuries [happen] to a player. Now I’m back, I hope I stay fit and I can focus on the positives.”

United have only won twice in England’s top-flight this term, a 4-0 mauling of Chelsea in their opening game and edging past Leicester City.

The Red Devils are just digesting the fact that both Paul Pogba and David De Gea will be missing from the encounter having picked up a foot and groin injury respectively.

Klopp on the other hand will be welcoming the pair of Matip and Alisson back into the fold.

Solskjaer ahead of the game said: “I’m an optimist, and I’d rather be an optimist and be proved wrong than a pessimist and be right.

“I always look at the next game as a chance. The Liverpool game is a great chance for us to go the other way.

“It’s in my nature to think of the best-case scenario. I know the fans and the players will be up for it.

“We’ve had some great sessions here and I know we’ll be prepared. The players will give absolutely everything, and let’s see where it takes us.”
