Messi Face Possible Two Year Ban For Comments After Chile Game

Lionel Messi is faced with a potential two-year ban following comments he made in the Alberceleste third place win over Chile in the Copa America competition.

Argentina were beaten by fierce Copa America rivals, Brazil in the semi-finals of the continental competition with the Selecaos going on to lift the cup in their final win against Peru.

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi was sent off for a clash with former Cardiff midfielder, Gary Medel – in which the latter seemed to be the aggressor – in Argentina’s third place play off with Chile.

Yet the referee went for his card and gave both players marching orders with Messi after the match showing his disgust at the officiating suggesting that the competition was set up for the Selecaos of Brazil to win.

The Argentine  said: “There is no doubt, the whole thing is set up for Brazil. I hope the VAR and referees don’t play any part in the final and that Peru can compete but it looks tough to me.

“I did not want to be part of this corruption, we shouldn’t have to be part of this disrepect we suffered during the Copa America.

“We could have gone further but we weren’t allowed into the final. Corruption, referees and all the rest stopped people from enjoying the football

“I always tell the truth and I’m honest, that is what keeps me calm, if what I say has repercussions that is not my business.

“I think that what happened is because of what I said [against Brazil].

“What I said last time perhaps came back to haunt me. With a yellow card that was the end of it.”

CONMEBOL prohibits directing of insults at its institution or personnel with the punishment for that being a two years ban.

The institution released a statement of their own describing Messi’s comments as unacceptable and a disrespect for the football players, personnel and professionals that have been a part of CONMEBOL since inception.
