NACA DG Was Not Sacked, He Resigned for Top UN Job – Presidency

  • Aliyu reluctantly accepted the offer of NACA, delaying the appointments for five months.
  • He is a top candidate to get the executive director UNAIDS job.

The Senior Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has stated that Dr. Sani Aliyu, the erstwhile Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA) resigned voluntarily and it was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Muhammadu Buhari had appointed Gambo Aliyu as his replacement.

This is a reaction to some reports claiming he was sacked.

“In this regard, false reporting to the effect that he was sacked for one reason or the other is unhelpful to his legitimate aspiration. He left on his own,” he added.

Nigerianews gathered that the former NACA boss had applied for the UN job and there are high indications that he will likely get the job.

With the backing of the former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole who recommended him for the job based on his previous works and also performance as NACA boss including the recently concluded National survey on HIV/AIDS which has been declared as the biggest survey ever carried out, Aliyu was fingered as the most suitable among all candidates running for the position.
