NANS threatens to disrupt election if FG, ASUU and ASUP fail to reach agreement

– National Association of Nigerian Students NANS has threatened to disrupt the 2019 General Election if the FG, ASUU, and ASUP fail to reach an agreement

The body comprising of all Nigerian students in tertiary institutions, National Association of Nigerian Students NANS have threatened to boycott and disrupt the 2019 General election.

According to the body, the only way the government can avoid this is to reach an agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU and Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics ASUP and see to it that the gates of all public tertiary institutions are reopened before the election.

Academic activities in public institutions across the country have been brought to a halt since the 5th of November, 2018 in exception of some public institutions, who refused to join in the strike.

NANS Zone B comprising of South-South and South East yesterday organized a peaceful protest at the Delta State end of the Niger Bridge.

The body barricaded the bridge as they demonstrated their displeasures towards the strike that has been on for days.

According to the reports, protesting students from 11 states within the South South and South East geographical zones of the country were seen with different placards to show awareness of their plight.

The NANS Zone B coordinator, Comrade Okereke Godson in his statement said that students could not be at home while the 2019 general elections will be allowed to hold.

He went on to issue a warning that the NANS would disrupt the election by chasing away voters on election day if the FG refused to reach agreement with ASUU and ASUP towards ending the ongoing strike.

Comrade Godson declared that “if the federal government fails to end the strike, we see it as a deliberate attempt to rig the poll because the election cannot hold while we remain at home. Let them open our campuses or election will not hold.”
