Nigerian Ibra Ake Clinches Award At The 61st Grammy Awards

The Grammys has remained the most prestigious award for singers for decades with so many placing the award as a benchmark for rating a singer’s success.
With the Nigerian Entertainment Industry being the largest in Africa, it was all joy for many Africans when Wizkid was nominated for the Best Album category for his part as producer and featured artist in Drake’s Views.
It was however disheartening when Wizkid couldn’t win the Grammys as producer of Drake’s One Dance.
Nigeria soon got another chance to get the prestigious award at the 61st Grammys through Seun Kuti. While the eyes of all Africans and Nigerians in particular were on Seun Kuti to bring home an award that has eluded his senior brother on four previous occasions, a Nigerian-American Producer, Ibra Ake elsewhere grabbed the award for his role in Childish Gambino’s “This is America” music video.

The Producer who is also a filmmaker and writer bagged his first ever Grammy award at the 61st Grammy awards held on the 10th of February, 2019 at the Staples Center.
The Nigerian-American visual artist took to his Twitter account to express his excitement on receiving the award. He wrote: “I can’t believe I just won a Grammy. Where’s the catch? Royalty forever.”

Ibra Ake started playing his trade in the Entertainment Industry as a photographer. Ibra Ake grew up spending his early years in Nigeria and New Jersey before going on to live in the US on a permanent basis.
The filmmaker is the brain – writer- behind the show, Atlanta, a hit show in which Daniel Glover with alter ego, Childish Gambino also features.
The pair have gone to collaborate in several productions since then including album covers, creative direction, screenwriting etc. A good reason for the pair to work together once again in the music video of This is America which won the Record of the Year, Song of the Year and two other categories at the Grammys 2019.
