Nigerian Immigration Service Set to Increase Price of Acquiring International Passports

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has revealed it has begun the process of reviewing and adjusting the charges attached to acquiring an international passport in Nigeria.

According to the NIS, the Immigration Agency can no longer process international passport at the current rates and charges due to the cost of acquiring booklets.

Speaking at the flagging off ceremony of the capacity building programme on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), controller-general of the NIS, Mr. Muhammad Babandede, made this known to newsmen in Abuja, yesterday.

Mr. Babandede did not reveal when the new charges will take effect, but he however said a letter has been sent to the presidency regarding the impending increase, which required Mr. President’s approval.

A quote from Mr. Babandede reads: “It is not easy for us to pay for booklets because of the cost. You will agree with me that air tickets have doubled in this country. You are aware that a lot of things have changed, but the passport fees have not changed.”

With the price of everything going up in Nigeria, Nigerians will not be too surprised that the cost of acquiring a basic government issued ID has also gone up! – although this is one development that Nigerians wouldn’t welcome.
