NLC insist on N30,000 as new minimum wage

– According to the Labour body, it said that the N30,000 is not even sufficient 

The Nigerian Labour Congress NLC in it continuous fight for the better welfare of Nigerian workers have insisted on N30,000 as the new minimum wage.

This recent statement was made known by the Labour union National President, Ayuba Wabba, who said the minimum wage of N30,000 means that a family of six will spend N50 per person every day.

Mr. Ayuba Wabba made this known during a public hearing on the minimum wage bill in Abuja.

The NLC leader hinted that the N30,000 the Labour body is demanding as the new minimum wage is not even enough and he insisted that the union will not accept anything below the proposed minimum wage.

He disclosed that there is a bill proposed by the committee  which include the government, labour, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA).

Ayuba Wabba said that the body were lucky “that the person that represented the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) was a lawyer and they drafted the bill, which is also in conformity with the practice and tradition.

“In 2011, the same thing happened. We also amended the bill and forwarded the copy. So clearly, this is how we have arrived at this level and therefore, I think that all of us must sympathize with the condition of Nigeria.

“N30,000 translates to N1,000 per day. N30,000 translates to N50 per meal for every member of the family. That is what it translates to. If you have a family of six, husband and wife and four children, it translates to N50 per meal. This is where we are. So, I want to plead with our governors.”
