Oba of Benin Bans Wearing of Beads Ahead of Traditional Ceremony

In Benin Kingdom, a temporary ban has been placed on the wearing of beads by the Oba of Benin ahead of the Ugie Ivie ceremony.

A circular carrying the information was released from his palace, which saw the monarch saying that a temporary ban has been placed on the wearing of beads in the kingdom.

“This is to inform Chiefs, Enigie, Ighe-Ohen, Edion-were, market women, youths and the general public that his Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolopolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin will celebrate “Ugie Ivie” in the Oba palace beginning from Tuesday 14th May to Tuesday 11th June 2019.

During the period of ‘Ughie Ivie,’  yhe wearing of bead is prohibited in Benin Kingdom until after the ceremony.”
