Obama Farewell Speech – Mr. President Couldn’t Hold Back the Tears

Outgoing President of the United States, Barack Obama could barely hold back tears as he gave his farewell speech prior to stepping down from office. Obama teared up as he paid tribute to his wife and daughters in an emotional speech given in his adoptive city of Chicago yesterday.

Turning to the first lady dressed in all black, Obama said, “Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the south side, for the past 25 years, you have not only been my wife and mother of my children, you have been my best friend,”

“You took on a role you didn’t ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humor,” said Obama.

“A new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model. You’ve made me proud. You’ve made the country proud.” as he spoke, the President, could not help but dab tears with a handkerchief as the 18,000 crowd went ballistic.

In a Facebook post shared before the speech, Obama had identified Chicago as the city where his road to success had begun – the post reads:

“for Michelle and me, Chicago is where it all started.”

Despite the absence of Obama’s younger daughter Sasha, 15, (which caused quite a stir on social media), Obama went on to address both girls, hailing them as two amazing young women, who had grown tremendously during the last eight years in the White House.

Referring to his daughters, Obama said,  “Of all that I have done in my life, I am most proud to be your dad,” Malia on her part, couldn’t fight back tears either, listening to her dad.

“You are smart, and you are beautiful, but more importantly, you are kind, and you are thoughtful, and you are full of passion, and you bore the burden of years in the spotlight so easily.” said Obama.

Turning to the Joe Biden, Obama said, “You were the first decision I made as a nominee, and it was the best, not just because you have been a great vice president, but because in the bargain, I gained a brother.” the comments drew a loud roar from the 18,000 strong crowd.

After the speech, there was time for one more group hug by the Obamas before they exited the stage as the crowd cheered on.
